Innovation Day at the Pacific Agriculture Show

We were honoured to deliver a talk at the Pacific Agriculture Show in Abbotsford, British Columbia on January 29th.

The Pacific Agriculture Show is showcases the latest and most innovative equipment and technology for the agriculture industry. We joined thousands of farmers and agri-food producers in a vibrant discussion on the future of efficient agriculture.

Icicle creator Steven Burton delivered a talk on “The Impact of the FDA Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) Ruling on Canadian Food Exporters.” The FSVP, introduced under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), will essentially extend FSMA regulations to companies that export food products to the United States, leaving them with the responsibility to bring their food safety programs into compliance with American regulations.

Food producers can’t rely on U.S. importers to take care of the FSVP challenges ahead, including implementing food safety measures that are not currently required in many countries outside the United States, including Canada. Rather than dealing with FSVP headache and non-compliant suppliers, U.S. importers may end up preferring domestic suppliers.

“With the introduction of the FSVP over the next 16 months, food safety non-compliance is a business risk that food producers cannot afford ‐ and the industry here is not prepared. Most Canadian food producers will have to deal with regulations that don’t even exist in Canada.” said Burton.

Learn more about FSVP in our spin-off article from Burton’s talk, “3 Steps to Comply with FSVP and Protect Your U.S. Business“.
